Korean Toner: What It's For and Why You Need It in Your Routine
If you're coming from Western skincare, you probably associate the word "toner" with that alcohol-laden liquid that stings and leaves your skin tight. Forget that. Korean toner is a completely different product and is one of the best-kept secrets of the K-Beauty routine.
Korean toner vs. Western toner: they are not the same
The main difference:
- Western toner: designed to remove residue and close pores. Often contains alcohol, witch hazel, and astringents. Dries out the skin.
- Korean toner: designed to hydrate, balance pH, and prepare the skin to better absorb subsequent products. Watery textures, alcohol-free, nourishing.
In the Korean routine, toner doesn't cleanse, it hydrates and preps.
What is a Korean toner for?
Balances pH after cleansing
Cleansers can disrupt your skin's natural pH (which is slightly acidic, around 5.5). Toner restores that optimal pH, allowing the active ingredients in subsequent serums to work better.
First layer of hydration
Toner is the first layer of hydration in your routine. It provides water to the skin, which serums and creams will then help to retain. Think of it as the "primer" for hydration.
Improves absorption of subsequent steps
Slightly damp skin absorbs products better. By applying toner before serum, you are ensuring that the serum penetrates more effectively.
How to apply a Korean toner?
There are two popular methods:
Method 1: With hands (recommended)
- Pour a generous amount into the palms of your hands
- Gently press onto your face (do not rub)
- Repeat 2-3 times ("7-skin method" or layering)
Method 2: With cotton pad
- Soak a cotton pad with toner
- Gently glide over the face following the direction of the pores
- Ideal if you want additional light exfoliation
What type of toner do you need?
- Dry skin: creamy or thick toner with hyaluronic acid and ceramides
- Oily/combination skin: watery toner with niacinamide or green tea extract
- Sensitive skin: toner with Centella Asiatica, panthenol, and aloe — like Purito SEOUL products
- Skin with spots: toner with niacinamide, arbutin, or vitamin C
Is toner mandatory?
It's not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. If you want an ultra-minimalist routine (cleansing + serum + cream + SPF), you can skip toner. But if you want to maximize the results of your serums and creams, a good toner makes all the difference.
In your routine with True-Yeppo products, toner would go between cleansing and the Centella serum.
Frequently asked questions
Does Korean toner contain alcohol?
Most do not. Modern Korean toners are formulated without denatured alcohol. Always check the INCI if you are sensitive to alcohol.
Can I use micellar water as a toner?
They are not the same. Micellar water cleanses (removes makeup and dirt). Korean toner hydrates and preps. They are different steps.
Can toner be applied around the eyes?
Yes, as long as the toner does not contain strong active ingredients (such as exfoliating acids). Hydrating Korean toners are safe for the eye area.
